What is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)?
EMDR is a structured treatment that encourages the patient to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation such as eye movements. This bilateral processing combined with focused memory activation can reduce the intensity and emotional response of the traumatic memory. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched and has been validated as an effective treatment for individuals with trauma and PTSD symptoms.
For additional information on EMDR you can go to EMDR International Association at www.emdria.org, the EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Program at www.emdrhap.org, or the EMDR Institute at www.emdr.com.
What are Early EMDR Interventions?
Early EMDR Interventions are specific EMDR protocols to help in the short term after a traumatic event. These interventions are designed to be short term, often between 2-5 sessions and focus on a particular recent event. By addressing a recent traumatic event with early EMDR interventions, the goal is to reduce symptoms and prevent negative self beliefs which can result from trauma. Early EMDR interventions can be offered individually or in groups. Below is some information to give some information about group EMDR interventions.
